Niulakita is the southernmost island of Tuvalu, and also the name of the only village on the island. It is an elliptically shaped, upscale atoll of about 1 km in diameter and 0.4 km ² land area. The island was purchased in 1944 by Great Britain.

In the 16th century the island was hit by various European sailors and received by different names such as La Solitaria, Independence, Sophia or Rocky.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the island was owned by the American businessman HJ Moors. The atoll was uninhabited until 1949 and was colonized by settlers from the overpopulated Niutao.
