Nukulaelae (old name: Michellsinseln ) is one of the nine districts of the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu. At the same time he is one of the atolls of the island state.

Nukulaelae located in the south of Tuvalu. Only Niulakita still lies south of Nukulaelae; only since the 1940s, however, it belongs to Tuvalu or to its political predecessors, the British colony of Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony (see History of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands).

The atoll Nukulaelae consists of about 15 small islands, and had 393 inhabitants in 2002. Two-thirds of the population was deported in the 19th century by slave traders from the islands. From 1865 to 1890 a part of the island was leased to German settlers.
