Nukufetau

Nukufetau is an atoll in the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu. It is located around 57 km south-west of Vaitupu. The atoll has approximately the shape of a rectangle of 10 km wide and 14 km long. Nukufetau consists of total of 33 Motus, the largest being Fale, Motulalo and Lafaga.

During World War II, an airport and a shipyard on the Motu Motulalo were created, but they were rarely used.

Population

Legend has it that the first inhabitants of the atoll were immigrants from Tonga.

The inhabitants of the atoll were divided before the arrival of missionaries in the early 18th century in three clans who lived in the three largest islands of the atoll. With the beginning of the missionary of the atoll but they were focused on the Motu Fale in the village Savave today.

Former Prime Minister of Tuvalu (2002-2004), Saufatu Sopoanga comes from Nukufetau.
