Naracoorte is a predominantly rural town in the south east of South Australia and is approximately 330 km from Adelaide on Riddoch Highway (A66 ) near the border with Victoria. It has 4888 inhabitants.

History

Before colonization by the whites lived the tribe of Aborigines Meintangk in this area, which oppose to the 1870s into the settlement by the whites.

The first white settlement in the area dates back to the 1842 back as the pioneer George Ormerod settled there. Three years later decided another settler, the wealthy Scottish immigrant William MacIntosh, to found a village, which he named after his birthplace Kincraig. He was there on a shop and also opened a hotel to attract more settlers. However, the population began in the 1850s to grow noticeably, after gold was discovered in the neighboring Victoria and many prospectors came through this area.

From the year 1869, the place was known officially as Narracoorte, with today's spelling had not yet emerged. Before that, there were several different names for the village, including Kincraig, Narracoorte or Skyetown. A year later, the settlement of the status of a town was granted. At that time there lived 900 inhabitants. In 1875 there was the first newspaper. Only after the railroad had reached Naracoorte in 1876, another was slow though steady population growth secured. 1924, the town was finally granted local self-government.
