Nau (Danube)

The Nau - origin in Langenau

The Nau is a left tributary of the Danube and 21.3 km long. At the Nau there are some old mills that are also partially protected monument.

Nau - origin

The Nau - origin is located in the northwest of Langenau right next to a youth hostel. It is a karst spring which pours about 230 liters per second in average. The source is located in a former quarry, from which date, however, there is nothing to see. The well is now completely filled with spring water. The water source originates in a part of the Lone, some of which seeps near Bern city underground and re- enters the light of day in the Nau - origin as well as in some neighboring sources.

Course

Shortly after the origin of the Rohngraben flows into the Nau, which will at that time also called Warm Ach. Then the river which crosses the city from west to east Langenau and combines this with the Flötzbach and on Kappenzipfel with the Cold Ach. Then it changes its direction to the south by the Donauried and closes shortly before the Sixenmühle with the Schammenbach together. From there it flows further to the southeast by Riedheim ( at Leipheim ) passes to the east in the Danube Günzburger forest, where they eventually flows into the Danube.

History

The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Around the fourth century the first settlements of the Alemanni developed at the Nau. The many mills on the Nau built for the linen mill and to grind the grain. During the 18th century were the territories used by the Nau for grazing animals, for the scattering and extraction of peat extraction. Today, there are in addition to the young cattle pastures and fields with crops. The peat has been set.
