Neeme Järvi

Neeme Järvi ( born June 7, 1937 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian -born conductor and since 1987 a U.S. citizen.

Time in Estonia to 1980

Järvi studied at the Tallinn School of Music percussion and choral conducting and from 1955 to 1960 conducting at the Leningrad Conservatory with Rabinovich and Mravinsky. From 1963 to 1979 he was musical director of the Estonian Radio Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, which was renamed in 1975 in Eesti Riiklik Sümfooniaorkester ( ERSO ). From 1966 he was also a top leader of the Estonian Opera House. In 1971 he won the prestigious competition of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In addition to his guest appearances at all the major orchestras in the Soviet Union, especially the Leningrad Philharmonic, with whom he performed in the U.S., followed by invitations to Western Europe, North and Central America and Japan. From 1977 Järvi also conducted at the opera houses in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and at the Metropolitan Opera.

Time in the West since 1980

In January 1980, he emigrated to the United States to New Jersey, where he appeared in the episode with all the major orchestras of North America. In 1982 he became principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, a post he held until 2004, representing the longest tenure of a single conductor in this orchestra. The orchestra grew thanks to industry sponsors from 80 to 110 members and also gained significantly in artistic quality. In addition, he took over from 1984 to 1988, the management of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra from 1990 to 2005, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. By 2009 he was music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and by 2011 the Hague Philharmonic Orchestra The Hague.

2010 took over Järvi again the Eesti Riiklik Sümfooniaorkester ( ERSO ). Despite the declared resignation in November 2010 because of inadequate subsidies he remained its artistic director. Since 2011 he has also been the artistic director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande from 2012 and its chief conductor.

Family

Neeme Järvi and his wife Liilia have three children. Her two sons, Paavo (* 1962) and Kristjan (* 1972), are also conductors. The daughter Maarika Järvi (born 1964 ) is a flutist.

Recording activities

Järvi is one with well over 400 recordings to the conductor with the most sound recordings. No other conductor has made so many unknown works available on recordings. His services to unknown romantic and modern repertoire moderate therefore are second to none. His extraordinary musicianship and Werkdurchdringung and contracts with quality-oriented record labels such as the Swedish BIS Records and the British Chandos Records secure virtually all his recordings a high musical and sonic level.
