Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality

Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality (formerly the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality ) is a consortium of South African municipalities Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Despatch and other locations under a common administration of the metropolitan municipality. This merger took place on 5 December 2000. The entire metropolitan community has 1,152,115 inhabitants ( 2011).

With Port Elizabeth as the fifth largest city in South Africa and an important seaport, numerous tourism and Africa's largest factory of VW in Uitenhage, Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality is the economic center of the Eastern Cape Province.

Named is the metropolitan municipality after the Nobel Peace Prize Nelson Mandela, who was born in the Eastern Cape.

The settlement White Location was the first factory settlement on the basis of the Native Urban Areas Act of 1923, an early apartheid law built.

History

The region has been especially marked by its industrial development in the 20th century. The Ford Motor Company built a factory in 1924 on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth.
