EThekwini (English eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality ) is a metropolitan municipality in the South African province of KwaZulu -Natal. It has 3,442,361 inhabitants (as of 2011) in an area of 2292 square kilometers. Seat of the district administration is Durban. James Nxumalo ( ANC) is the mayor.
The origin of the name and the name itself is disputed. According to the online dictionary isizulu.net eThekwini is the Lokativform of itheku or amatheku. The two words stand for, harbor 'or' lagoon ' or even animal [or ] man with one testicle '. As Obed Mlaba (former mayor) in 2007 noted that meaning, he advocated to rename the district. However, his plans were not implemented.
The main cities are in eThekwini Durban, Amanzimtoti, Umkomaas Umlazi, Chatsworth, Pinetown, Hillcrest, Cato Ridge, Mpumalanga, KwaMashu, Inanda, Verulam, Tongaat and Umhlanga Rocks.
