Nero d'Avola

Nero d' Avola (Italian, "Black of Avola ") is a red variety probably of Sicilian origin, which is widespread in southern Italy and by locals as " Principe Siciliano " ( Sicilian Prince ) is called.

The area under cultivation of the vine is in Sicily in 2013 alone about 18,000 hectares. She is one of the traditional varieties of Sicily and also under the name " Calabrese " known to the Calabria as the presumed origin of the vine indicates, though it is grown there little. The precursor of the vine are more likely to be found in Greece. Smallest stocks are also known in Switzerland ( 0.1 acres, as of 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG ).

The Nero d' Avola is often, less often used in blends with Frappato also with the varieties Nerello Mascalese and Perricone.
