Nerses of Lambron

Nerses of Lambron (Armenian Ներսես Լամբրոնացի; Nerses Lambronatsi ) (* 1153 in the castle Lambron (Armenia ); † July 17, 1198 in Tarsus (Turkey) ) was Archbishop of Tarsus in the Kingdom of Lesser Armenia and one of the greatest figures in Armenian literature and the Armenian apostolic Church.

Life

Nerses of Lambron comes from the family of the Hethumiden. He was a son of Oshin II (1125-1170) and the Shahantukhd, who comes from the family of Pahlavuni and is a descendant of Gregory the Illuminator. His great-uncle was Catholicos Nerses IV Schnorhali. From him Nerses 1169 is ordained a priest. In 1176 he was ordained by the new Catholicos Gregory IV Tgha bishop.

At the Synod of Hromkla he considers 1179 a now famous Synodalrede, which testifies to the great efforts of the Middle Ages to the unity of the Church. This speech is considered as a masterpiece of eloquence and style; it shows freshness and vitality, theological and ecumenical vision and enthusiasm for the unity of the Church.

1180/81 he was made responsible for the diocese of Tarsus is entrusted. As a promoter of ecumenism, he is branded a traitor to the true faith and the traditions of the Armenian Church of the Prince ( later King ) Levon, because of its openness to other churches, and its passion for unity. However, Levon gives him his confidence and sent him to Constantinople Opel to resume negotiations with a view to a reunion of the churches.

Works

Nerses of Lambron is considered one of the greatest writers of Armenian literature, as a poet and author of commentaries, speeches, letters, as well as a translator - he mastered the languages ​​Greek, Latin, Syriac and Coptic. He also wrote liturgical and hagiographic writings.
