New Smyrna Beach is a city in Volusia County in the U.S. state of Florida with 22,464 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

New Smyrna Beach is located on the east coast of Florida directly on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway. The town is located about 30 km east of DeLand, and 70 km northeast of Orlando.

History

New Smyrna Beach was founded in 1768 by the English physicist Dr. Andrew Turnbull; at that time it was merely New Smyrna. It is the oldest city in Volusia County and one of the oldest in all of Florida. Due to the fact that Spanish missionaries settled already in the 60s of the 16th century in the area, New Smyrna Beach is often referred to as the second oldest city in the United States. Founder Turnball took about 1,500 Greek settlers from Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey) and the Greek islands ( and Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza), around here grow hemp and sugar cane and to produce rum.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 22,464 inhabitants distributed to 16,847 households. The population density was 313.3 inh. / Km ². 90.8 % of the population were white, 5.9% African American, 0.3% Native American and 1.1% Asian Americans. 0.5 % were members of other ethnic groups and 1.4% in different ethnic groups. 2.8% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 45.1 % of all households lived in 16.7 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 57.1 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.01 persons and the average family size is 2.54 people.

12.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 17.0% were 20-39 years old, 26.8 % were 40-59 years old and 40.8 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 54 years. 47.9 % of the population were male and 52.1% female.

The average annual income was $ 49,625, while 13.0 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 95.24 % of the population spoke Spanish 2.84% and 1.92 % had a different mother tongue.

Traffic

New Smyrna Beach is 44 crossed by Interstate 95, U.S. Highway 1 (SR A1A, SR 5) and Florida State Road. In addition, the freight railroad of the Florida East Coast Railway runs through the town. The nearest airport is Daytona Beach International Airport ( about 20 km north ).

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 355 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) within the average range. There was a murder, three rapes, 22 robberies, 91 injuries, 290 burglaries, 821 thefts, 40 car thefts and three arson.
