NGC 55

NGC 55 is the name of a visible from the side of spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor. NGC 55 has an angular extent of 32.4 '× 5.6 ' and an apparent magnitude of 7.8 mag. Thus, this spiral galaxy that is part of the Sculptor Group, which zwölfthellste galaxy in the sky. The galaxy is, however, unobservable in Central Europe. NGC 55 was discovered on August 4, 1826 by James Dunlop. Even though the star system for Sculptor group is counted, it has a radial velocity, which implies a belonging to the Local Group. In fact, the galaxy is on the border between the sculptor and the Local Group.
