The Nieuwe Republiek ( Dutch for New Republic ) was a short-lived Boer republics of the 19th century on the territory of present-day Republic of South Africa.

It consisted of proclamation of independence on 16 August 1884 to 20 July 1888, was located on the northern edge of the present province of KwaZulu -Natal.

History

Boer and British mercenaries had in 1884 the Zuluherrscher Dinuzulu ka Cetshwayo helped to the throne, Usibepu to defeat his rival. Then Dinuzulu had given them land and management rights on the banks of the river Mfolozi. On August 5, 1884, there formed the Volksraad of the Nieuwe Republiek, Parliament. The mercenaries founded a new community and proclaimed on August 16, 1884 their " Nieuwe Republiek " ( New Republic ) with a capital that was given on 23 September 1884 names Vryheid (Freedom). The written agreement with Dinuzulu on the land transfer was also closed on August 16.

First and only president of the state was the Boer General Lucas Johannes Meyer. The system of government was based on that of the Transvaal and the laws leaned against the local. Because many of the settlers from the Transvaal came, there was relatively soon the desire for an association. In April 1888, the Government made ​​contact it. On July 20, 1888 Agreement on the merger was finally signed by both governments in Vryheid. The small state system was dissolved and incorporated into the South African Republic. At the end of the Second Boer War, the area was incorporated into the province of Natal.
