Nik Kershaw

Nicholas David Kershaw ( born March 1, 1958 in Bristol, England) - Nik Kershaw known as - is an English pop musician, who in the 1980s some hits like I Will not Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Would not It Be Good or The Riddle was able to record. Later he joined inter alia as a composer Chesney Hawkes or for The Hollies in appearance.

Life and work

Kershaw grew up in the county of Suffolk in Ipswich. With ten years he stood on a stage for the first time. His parents recognized early the talent of her son. So he learned as a child the instruments guitar, bass, keyboard and drums. Even as a schoolboy Kershaw has always been a member of various bands. Nevertheless, he started after leaving school was initially trained at the employment office in Ipswich, but he broke off. In 1981 he founded the funk band The Fusion. As the band got a record deal, to Kershaw tried as a solo artist and in 1983 was awarded a first own record deal.

Under the name Nik Kershaw he published in September 1983 with I Will not Let the Sun Go Down on Me his first single. In February 1984, appeared with Human Racing and the related album, which held in several countries for weeks in the top ten. Around the same time with the song reached Kershaw Would not It Be Good Top 10 in the UK and German charts. Due to the success of the debut album he released in October of the same year the follow-up LP The Riddle advance came from the eponymous single out also. From that point on you could Nik Kershaw are among the pop stars of the 1980s. In 1985 he played on the initiated by Bob Geldof Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium.

After the two other, far less successful albums Radio Musicola (1986) and The Works (1989 ) is largely Kershaw pulled back from the music business. Between 1990 and 1998 he was sporadically active as a studio musician and songwriter, among other things, Boyzone, Bonnie Tyler, Cliff Richard, Colin Blunstone and Chesney Hawkes.

After with The Collection, he published a first best-of album in August 1991, was released in late 1998, the second official greatest hits album with two remixes in typical 1990s style. Nik Kershaw tried in 1999 with the album 15 Minutes a comeback. Although this album and the sequel To Be Frank released in 2001 received positive reviews but sold poorly.

The album Then & Now 2005 contains a mix of old hits and four new songs.

For the album You've Got to Laugh Kershaw finished off a record deal. He released the album on 26 October 2006 on his own label, Shorthouse Records and in Apple's iTunes Store. In You've Got to Laugh Simon Phillips, Nick Beggs ( Kajagoogoo ) and Imogen Heap act as a guest musician. On 25 April 2008 the album in Germany under the label Rough Trade was published.

On February 1, was released in 2010 with No Frills a collection of selected titles in newly recorded acoustic versions. The album is available on Kershaw's website and through the iTunes Store.

On 19 October 2012, the double album Genesis Revisited II by Steve Hackett appeared. Nik Kershaw sang on the first CD, the track The Lamia.

In addition to his work as a musician Nik Kershaw has also written a book. In Spilling the Beans On ... Making It in Music, he throws a competent and humorous look at the music business. The book is available in English only.

Nik Kershaw has with his first wife, who participated as a background singer on several of his albums, three children. In November 2003, the two separated after 20 years of marriage.
