Nikon D3100

The Nikon D3100 is a digital SLR ( DSLR) camera with 14.2 megapixel DX format image sensor and HD video function that was introduced in August 2010; it has been available since September 2010. The D3100 follows the Nikon D3000 and is positioned by the manufacturer in entry-level segment. To store the image data comes in the D3100 an SD memory card used. The camera features like the models D3000, Nikon D40 and Nikon D60 not have its own autofocus motor, which can be fully used only lenses with a built-in motor (AF -S). The camera has no mirror lockup, includes the new Nikon EXPEED2 image processor. 2012 D3100 was replaced by the Nikon D3200.

Modifications and improvements

In contrast to the older models D90 and D5000, the D3100 has an automatic focus tracking in video mode. Furthermore, it is possible ( the Nikon GP-1 approximately ) to connect a GPS receiver directly to the camera body; the camera stores the position data in the Exif field of image files in RAW or JPEG format, allowing georeferencing of the images.

Also, the " guide mode " has been extended: it shows the user when taking possible steps to improve the settings for the scene, so that the user is introduced to the use, without prior knowledge in photography.

GPS capability

The D3100 has a combined interface for cable release and a GPS receiver such as the Nikon GP-1 to allow for easy geotagging of JPEG and NEF files. The GPS interface processes in addition to the GPS data and compass information ( Heading). This function is only used by Geotagger third party.
