Nižný Hrabovec

Nižný Hrabovec (Hungarian Alsógyertyán - to 1902 Alsóhrabóc ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the Nižný Hrabovec Ondava which forms a nearly ten kilometer wide new valley and thus a northwestern bulge of the East Slovak Lowland along with their tributary Topľa. The city Vranov nad Topľou is six kilometers away from Nižný Hrabovec.

History

The place was first mentioned in 1260. In addition to the Roman Catholic Church there is in the church a Greek Catholic church from the year 1825.

Economy and infrastructure

Between Nižný Hrabovec and the neighboring community Hencovce spreads to 2.5 km ² from an industrial area. Here is the location of the company Bukóza Holding, as, a wood processing plant producing cellulose in addition to various sawn goods and a power plant operates.

The national road 18 from Prešov after Michalovce and the parallel railway line run in east-west direction through the church, also crosses here the highway 554 ( Havaj - Oborín ) the national road 18 in North-South direction.

Statistics

With 1600 inhabitants (August 2008) Nižný Hrabovec one of the larger communities in Okres Vranov nad Topľou. The population consists of 94% Slovaks, 5% are Roma. 73 % of the population are Roman Catholics, 20 % gave as a confession of Greek- Catholic.

Personalities

The Hungarian art historian and cultural scientist János Mácza was born on August 4, 1893 in Nižný Hrabovec.
