Noakhali District

Noakhali ( Bengali: নোয়াখালী জেলা, Noẏākhālī Jela ) is an administrative district in the south-eastern Bangladesh, located within the Division Chittagong, the superior administrative unit.

The 3600.99 km ² large district is bordered to the north by the neighboring districts Kumilla and Chandpur, on the east by the districts of Chittagong and Feni, on the south by the estuary of the Meghna and the Bay of Bengal and on the west by the districts Lakshmipur and Bhola.

The two main rivers are the Bamni and the Meghna.

The 1821 under the name Bhulua created in 1868 and renamed in Noakhali district administration is administratively divided into six so-called Upazilas: Noakhali Sadar, Begumganj, Chatkhil, Companiganj, Hatiya and Senbagh. Within this administrative subdivision, there are five self-governing cities ( municipalities ), 83 Union Parishads (village councils) and 978 villages.

The largest city of the district 's more than 75,000 inhabitants, Noakhali. The regional administration had to move due to changing of the river bed of the Meghna eight kilometers in the northern Maijdi, where it is still today.

History

The area formerly belonged to the kingdom Bhulua. The name change is related to the interference with the surrounding nature in context: Due to the increasing agricultural use of the northern regions fell from the flood waters of the Dakatia of the mountains in Tripura ( tipperary ) arises from a threat that was countered by a sewer. This 1660 -built artificial watercourse flows into the rivers Meghna and Feni. After the completion of the canal Bhulua 1868 in Noakhali was - composed of Noa (new) and khal (canal) - renamed.

The district was repeatedly hit in the past by natural disasters: So in 1970 a cyclone killed about 1 million people.
