Noćaj

Noćaj ( Serbian Cyrillic: Ноћај ) is a village in the Opština Sremska Mitrovica in northern Serbian province of Vojvodina. According to the census of 2002 2120 people live in the village.

Geography

The village lies in the Opština Sremska Mitrovica, in the Srem Okrug. Geographically, the village in the northern part of the region, Mačva is located in Vojvodina, while the southern part of the Mačva region in central Serbia is located. The nature reserve Zasavica is located near the village. Noćaj, the city Mačvanska Mitrovica and another four villages are the only parts of the autonomous province of Vojvodina, the Sava are the south (right). Located during the most part of Vojvodina left of the Save and consists of the regions Banat, Srem and Backa. The village is located 10 km south of Sremska Mitrovica. The village is situated at an out of town road. The village lies on the right bank of the Sava.

Population

Had Noćaj in the census 2002 2120 inhabitants, while there were 1991 2237 inhabitants. After the last three censuses the population of Noćaj drops. The population represent a majority Orthodox Serbs. In addition, 8 other peoples living in the village, these are: Croats, Yugoslavs, Hungarians, Slovaks, Montenegrins, Russians, Slavic Muslims and Roma. The village consists of 676 households.

Demography

History

At a small tributary of the Sava near Sremska Mitrovica, the Bitva, stood a castle, which lay in the historic Hungarian Banovina of Mačva. This royal castle was first mentioned in 1336 and formed the nucleus of the present village Noćaj. Thus, the year 1336 is seen as the founding year of Noćaj. The Serbian Prince Lazar and Holy Hrebeljanović took the castle of 1381. 1386 took Änhänger the Hungarian Queen Maria of Anjou (1370-1395) at the village, caught a small Croatian army. 1426 Ceruj battle took place near the village, some of which are still preserved memorabilia. The village had been abandoned some time in the period of the Ottoman occupation of Serbia and later resettled. In 1997, the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Apostles Peter and Paul was built in the village center.

Personalities

Noćaj is known as the residence of Stojan Čupić. He was ( " The dragon of Noćaj " ) called " Zmaj Od Noćaja ". He is a hero of the First Serbian Uprising, which lasted from 1804 to 1813. The football club of Noćaj is called " Zmaj " ( dragon).
