Nommay

Nommay is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Nommay is located on 333 m above sea level, about five kilometers northeast of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the northeastern part of the basin of Montbeliard, on the western edge of the wide valley of the Savoureuse, at the foot of the heights of the Grands Bois.

The area of ​​3.19 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the gently undulating countryside in the Burgundian Gate ( trouée de Belfort ). The eastern part of the territory occupied by the approximately 1.5 kilometer wide valley of Savoureuse, which is on average 325 m. Through this valley flows the Savoureuse with several turns south to Allan. Several former sand and gravel pits are now filled with water and used as a recreational area of Montbéliard. Along the river runs a riparian zone; otherwise the level is used for agriculture. To the west, the municipality's area extends over a 20 m high slope on the adjacent heights of Nommay, which are divided by a dry valley which opens at the village. Neighboring communities of Nommay are Châtenois -les -Forges and Trévenans in the north, and Dambenois Brognard in the east, Vieux- Charmont in the south and Grand- Charmont in the West.

History

The first mention of Nommay took place in 1147 under the name Novanna. The name goes back to the words neuf (new) and meix ( residence). Since the 14th century the village rule of the noble family Grammont, on the hill west of the village had their castle (now no longer visible remains) and was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard belonged. 1541 the Reformation was introduced.
