Nova Gorica

Nova Gorica, German and Nova Gorica is a town in western Slovenia, close to the Italian border. The city is located about 65 km west of the state capital Ljubljana ( Ljubljana ) and 35 km north of the Italian city of Trieste. The city had 2002 13.852 inhabitants. 20 694 people also lived in the neighboring suburbs and overall the Municipality of Nova Gorica has today calculation as 36 710 inhabitants.

The town of Nova Gorica originated as a result of the demarcation between Italy and Yugoslavia in the Peace of Paris of 1947, which divided the city of Gorizia. The majority of the city remained in Italy, smaller suburbs, and in 1945 occupied by Yugoslav partisans station of the Bohinj railway Yugoslavia were granted. The state border runs through the station square (Piazza Transalpina ). In 1948, the foundation stone was laid for Nova Gorica, a city from the drawing board as a new urban center for the Yugoslav side of the border. Since the founding of the University of Nova Gorica in 1995 Nova Gorica is a university town.

As of 21 December 2007, the state border, Slovenia and Italy may be exceeded due to the Schengen Agreement, the Slovenia joined at any point; border controls were recruited. Thus in 1945 resulting division of Gorizia is overcome.

Following the German city names Gorizia, Nova Gorica is referred to in some texts not officially Nova Gorica.

Not far from the town is the place of pilgrimage Holy Mountain.
