Geographical Location

Nowy Wiśnicz is located about ten kilometers south of Bochnia, between Krakow and Tarnow.

History

1238, the village was mentioned for the first time. 1616 the village Rogozie on efforts by Stanisław Lubomirski by Sigismund III. Wasa its town charter. The castle in the village was built in the 14th century. In the 16th century the castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Further modifications were made in the following centuries. 1772 during the first partition of Poland the town fell to Austria. 1824 Juliusz Kossak, the painter was born. 1831 the castle fell victim to fire. The monastery of the Carmelites was rebuilt in the 18th century into a prison and has this function until today. 1949, the castle was rebuilt.

There is a manor house dating from the 19th century which was restored in 1979 between the castle and the repurposed into a prison monastery.
