Numbulwar

Numbulwar is an Aboriginal settlement on the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory, Australia. The settlement with 672 inhabitants, is located about 570 kilometers east of Darwin and 250 kilometers south of Nhulunbuy.

History

The settlement land is the property of the traditional clans of Nuggayinbala. The settlement was founded in 1952 as the Rose River Mission, an Aboriginal mission station, which was founded by the Church Missionary Society. In the 1970s, the mission station was closed. Numbulwar is managed by Numbulwar Numburindi Community Council.

Aboriginal

The population of the town mainly speaks Kriol, but also Wubuy and Anindilyakwa. The Aborigines in place have strong cultural ties to the Anindilyakwa living on Groote Eylandt, and living at the Aborigines in Ngukurr.

The indigenous population in Numbulwar maintains their ceremonies and traditions, in particular the initiation of boys and men.

The Aboriginal settlement is also the home of the internationally renowned Red Flag Dancers and Yilila band.

In the village there is a Handicraft Initiative at Numbulwar School Secondary Girls.

Location descriptions

Located on the southeast side of the mouth of the Rose River Place is one of the places in the Northern Territory, which is the most secluded. The settlement has a commercial transaction, a police station, a community school, a post office, a health center and a machine repair shop. The airline Mission Aviation Fellowship maintains a base in the village. The airport is located about three kilometers from the village.

Access by Numbulwar is possible only with a permit.
