History

→ Main article: S-Bahn Nürnberg - History

Already in 1966, the first demands for an S- train network in the metropolitan area of Nuremberg were loud. A step in this direction was made by the German Federal Railways with the compression of the clock on the main routes during rush hour in 1969. Also the connection between Nuremberg and Rothenburg was involved in it, but could be offered because of the high link utilization no fixed clock. This offer had to be withdrawn in the following years for operational reasons and because of the partially poor utilization of the trains again, still an improvement of Zugangebotes was the part of the railway continues to target. For this purpose, the then Railway Board (BD) Nuremberg in 1971 awarded the design contract to develop solutions to improve the public transport offer. The results was presented on 20 March 1975 as a " framework plan for the S -Bahn Nürnberg ", in which an S -Bahn line from Nuremberg to Rothenburg was included. This was part of the set on June 29, 1979 " 1 Stage of construction "of the S -Bahn Nürnberg as well as the closed on November 2, 1981 financing agreement, whereby the recessed planning could begin.

Preliminary planning

→ Main article: evolution towards the new Nuremberg -Ingolstadt

The realization of the line was dependent on the planned between Roth and Fischbach " mainline replacement route " by the Nuremberg Reich Forest, which relieve the stretch Nuremberg -Roth and thus make room for the suburban railway traffic on the existing double track should. After resisting the "Imperial Forest - route " was heard from the adjacent municipalities and citizens groups, the BD Nuremberg between 1980 and 1985 underwent the plans on behalf of the German Federal Railroad an examination. Parallel to beat the BD with the construction of a new railway line from Nuremberg to Ingolstadt an alternative variant before, with the exception of the administrative district Swabia and the city of Augsburg was popular in politics and the adjacent municipalities. Thereupon, a further report was commissioned, which delayed the S-Bahn plans again. Only after the completion of this report in June 1991, spoke out for the new line, the plans for the S3 could be resumed. These were now in favor of its own, with two-pronged encounter sections parallel to the railway line Nuremberg -Augsburg running single-track route, as amended.

Construction

The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the track took place on 29 June 1994 at the Nuremberg - Reichelsdorf station. For the forthcoming construction, which included the extension of the existing rail infrastructure, the construction of many engineering structures and the S- Bahn just upgrading and construction of the existing stations on the new line, about 700 million marks were (about 358 million euros ) was spent.

The breakpoints Nuremberg - Sandreuth, Reichelsdorfer Keller, Katzwang, Schwabach -Limbach, Rednitzhembach and Büchenbach were abandoned and replaced by shifted able edifices on the S- Bahn line. At the stations Nuremberg Eibach, Nuremberg - Reichelsdorf and Schwabach separate S -Bahn platforms were built and the old platforms shut down for the passenger, the Roth station received a new, just north of the station building located ligands, central platform for the ending at S -Bahn trains. With a delay of three years, the breakpoint Nuremberg - Steinbühl was opened to traffic on September 5, 2004, nor, located at the eastern end of the Überwerfungsbauwerks between Nuremberg and Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof - Sandreuth. All built platforms are 145 m long, 96 cm high and equipped with barrier-free access. As construction option, the construction of the holding point Nuremberg was Wienerstraße provided between Nuremberg and Nuremberg - Eibach - Reichelsdorf. To link with the private transport were bicycle storage (B R) at all stations, except in Schwabach -Limbach, as well as for passenger cars (P R) at all stations, except in built - Steinbühl Nuremberg and Nuremberg - Sandreuth.

The control of the entire route is from a newly constructed electronic signal box in Nuremberg Eibach, which was put into operation on 8 May 2001.

Following the revised planning an alternate single and double- S-Bahn route was created, and the runs west from Nuremberg Central Station and Nuremberg, between Nuremberg - Eibach - Reichelsdorf and the terminus Roth east of the existing railway line between Nuremberg and Augsburg. Thus, the S -Bahn trains begin as scheduled on the tracks 1-3 and the existing railway tracks towards Roth could be threaded without crossing, had the track plan of the western station exit, including the creation of two sidings for train - sets be modified in part. Subsequently, a total of 604 meter long single-track Überwerfungsbauwerk was built over the railway lines to Bamberg / Würzburg and to Crailsheim. Another bridge structures created an approximately 125 -meter-long steel truss bridge for crossing Südwesttangente and Main -Danube Canal, a Überwerfungsbauwerk between Nuremberg - Eibach and Nuremberg - Reichelsdorf to change from the West on the east side of the railway line between Nuremberg and Augsburg, and three integral bridges about the Rednitz, Schwabach and Aurachtal. To protect the residents, the route was provided almost over entire length with noise barriers.

The 604 m long Steinbühler bridge was the longest bridge in Nuremberg at the opening.

Furthermore, it is electrified throughout and must be driven with a maximum line speed of 120 km / hr. All stations and stops along the route have 145 m long and 96 cm above top of rail high platform.

Train services

On the line electric locomotives of the series 143 are used with four-part x - cart - pull trains, under the designation line S2 ( Roth - Altdorf - Nuremberg ) run.

Accidents

On March 25, 2003, the date only accident occurred on the track, in which an over Nuremberg traveling from Roth to Altdorf S-Bahn train on the high-speed switch of the control center About Rednitzhembach ( kilometer 16.9 ) derailed. At this after a short time before maintenance work carried out a cable was incorrectly connected again, making the switch rails and the frog point to each other in opposite positions had. The control car of the train followed the first question to branch standing ( to the left) switch blades, only to derail the straight made frog point together with the middle car and the locomotive. The thereby resulting damage to the superstructure and vehicles amounted to 600,000 euros, the passengers no one was injured. The vehicles involved in the accident were then recovered and examined for damage. It turned out that the processing of the x - carriage would not be worthwhile, whereupon they were retired; the electric locomotive on the other hand has been repaired.
