Octon, Hérault
Octon [ ok.tɔ ] ( Occitan: Auton ) is a commune in the department of Hérault in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It has 447 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) on an area of 22 km ².
Geography
Octon located about 60 km from the Mediterranean Sea in the last foothills of the Massif Central in the Languedoc. The village is located in a bush land with vineyards at the reservoir Salagou. The landscape is characterized by the red rocks ( les ruffes ), the hills are remnants of old lava flows. The Mediterranean climate means mild winters and hot, dry summers. Autumn is a time of heavy rainfall.
Economy
The viticulture and tourism are the main industries. It is the market selling local produce, which takes place every Thursday in the summer, a tourist attraction.
