Oltu

Oltu is a city in Turkey and also the administrative center of the homonymous district in the province of Erzurum. The city has 20 305 inhabitants Oltu and the county 32,218 (as of 2008 ). Oltu lies in the valley of the river of the same name in the north of the province, bordering the province of Artvin.

History

Oltu was under the name Oltisi (Georgian ოლთისი ) in the 9th and 10th century part of the Georgian Kingdom of Tao Klardschetien, from 1001 of the Kingdom of Georgia. After the invasion of the Seljuk Turks in 1080 it became part of the Turkish Beyliks the Saltukiden. The Saltukiden followed the Rum Seljuks. These were followed by other Mongolian and Turkish rulers. Later Oltu was part of the Ottoman Empire and remained so until the Treaty of San Stefano of 1878. Oltu moved into Russian hands and was until 1917 part of the oblast of Kars. After the turmoil of the October Revolution Oltu was left to the Armenians. A little later formed Muslim militias that sought annexation Oltus to Turkey. The Oltukonflikt became the trigger of the Turkish - Armenian War. At the end of the war was Oltu part of Turkey, and in 1926 a county.
