Dr. Dawn Holliday works as a medical examiner in Los Angeles. In a guest lecture on Hawaii is her former lover, the naval officer Tom Haber, killed. She quits her job then in Los Angeles and goes to Honolulu. With their forensic investigations it forms a counterpoint to the doubly divorced police officer Mack Wolfe, who works with more traditional police methods. Despite this, both jointly solve crimes, which developed in the course of the series between the two a relationship.
Other figures in the series are a friend of Wolfe local police chief Captain Dave Duke, as well as the forensic staff Nui Shaw and Kimo.
