Opononi

Opononi is a settlement in the Far North district in the Northland region of the North Island of New Zealand. It lies on the east bank of the mouth of the Hokianga in the Tasman Sea. State Highway 12 through the town. The nearest towns are Omapere about 3 km south Pakanae and about 2 km northeast. The population of Opononi and Omapere was 477 inhabitants, which represents a significant decrease of 120 residents since the last census in 2001 at the 2006 census.

The School of Opononi, Oponi Area School is a co-educational composite school for grades 1 to 15 and in 2009 had a decile rating of 2 and 205 students.

In the sea front of the town lived in the summer of 1955/56, the tame dolphin Opo, the New Zealand attracted considerable attention at the time. He was buried in the place and erected a sculpture.
