Oranjemund is a city of the same constituency in the region ǁ Karas, Namibia with about 3900 inhabitants.

Oranjemund is on the north side of the mouth of the Orange River into the Atlantic Ocean, which forms the border with the Republic of South Africa here. Opposite, on the south side of the river, is Alexander Bay ( Alexanderbaai ), is connected to the Oranjemund on the Ernest Oppenheimer Bridge. Oranjemund owes its existence to the diamond mining in northern diamond area.

Status and policy

Status

The village was to 1 August 2011 in private ownership of the diamond company Namdeb and was led by the " Oranjemund Town Managemen Company". Namdeb supplied the inhabitants who work for the most part for him, due to the secluded location with a very good infrastructure and a diverse leisure activities.

In November 2009 it was announced that the proclamation should be completed as Namibian town until mid-2010. However, the process lasted until August 2011. The city was transferred to the State of Namdeb, said Namdeb until further still takes the backup of urban services. On March 23, 2012, city council was first used, which gradually will take over the administration. Until this process is complete Oranjemund remains a closed city and access to non-residents is only possible with a special permit.

History

After Hans Merensky had found in Alexander Bay Diamond, Oranjemund was founded in 1936 operated by the diamond mining and the De Beers group belonging Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa ( CDM).

With the increasing shift of diamond mining in the Atlantic Ocean ( offshore production ) and the associated plans to abandon the restricted diamond area, has recently passed as the first step Oranjemund of local government and has been open to the public the city. An intensively used agricultural and tourism facilities are planned as a luxury hotel in the future.

Around 4 km south of the town of Oranjemund small airport with scheduled flights to and from Windhoek, Lüderitz and Cape Town as well as ferry services is to Luderitz and Alexander Bay.
