Orbec

Orbec is a municipality with 2296 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the French region of Lower Normandy Calvados region. Orbec is the capital ( chef -lieu ) of the canton of the same name.

History

Orbec was a Norman fief, which was owned by the Clare family, a branch line of the Rolloniden in the 11th and 12th centuries. The most significant owner was Richard de Bien Faite († 1090 ), who was temporarily Regent of England. End of the 12th century came Orbec by marriage to William Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke. At the conquest of Normandy by King Philip II Augustus came to France in 1204. Until the French Revolution (1789-1799) was an influential Orbec city is the seat of Vicomté and a Bailliage whose jurisdiction the larger cities of Lisieux and Bernay had been responsible. 1790, the administration of the region was moved to Lisieux.
