Östhammar Municipality

Östhammar is a municipality (Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Uppsala County and the historic province of Uppland. The main town of the municipality is Östhammar.

Geography

The municipality is located in the territory of Roslagen. So now both the archipelago off the coast of Upplands as well as the adjacent mainland are called. The communities Norrtälje and Östhammar now make up the largest part of Roslagen.

History

The municipality was created Östhammar 1974 by merging the municipalities Östhammar and Dannemora as well as a part of the community Oland.

Economy

Today the economy is dominated by two large companies, Forsmarks force grupp, a subsidiary of Vattenfall, Forsmark and Sandvik Coromant in Gimo. Despite the small size with only 59 inhabitants Forsmark is known throughout Sweden. Here, the three nuclear reactors at Forsmark 1, 2 and 3 with a total capacity of 3,102 MW.
