Impact crater

Paasselkä (formerly Paasivesi ) is an oval -shaped lake, which is located in an eroded impact crater in Southern Savo in Finland. The lake forms a Teilsee of Orivesi, which in turn is part of the Saimaa lake system. The Paasselkä is characterized, in contrast to the other lakes in the region, owing to the absence of islands. He is unusually deep and has a maximum water depth of 75 m.

Impact craters

The Paasselkä impact event occurred in the Triassic period about 228.7 ± 3 million years ago. The diameter is about 10 km ..

An anomaly in the Earth's magnetic field were other indications of a possible impact crater. In 1999, led a deep hole for the detection of hitherto ninth known impact crater in Finland. In contrast to other Finnish craters this was not overlaid by layers of sediment.

Light phenomena

Lake often occur phenomena of light which can potentially be associated with the local magnetic anomaly.
