Palazzo Bianco

The Palazzo Bianco (Italian: White Palace ) is a palace in the center of the Italian city of Genoa. It is situated on Via Garibaldi, which forms the Strade Nuove together with Via Balbi and Via Cairoli. The historically important palaces on the Strade Nuove (Italian: New roads ), including the Palazzo Bianco, are core components of the Palazzi dei Rolli. Since 2006 Strade Nuove and count the Palazzi dei Rolli their World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Palazzo Bianco is one of the major art galleries of Genoa, and with the neighboring Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Doria Tursi it forms a Museumsagglomerat in the old town.

History

The Palazzo Bianco was built in 1530-1540 by Luca Grimaldi. 1658 went to the palace in the possession of the De Franchi family over, and in 1711 he was handed over by Frederico Franchi De Maria Durazzo Brignole - Sale.

From 1714 to 1716 major restoration work has been done on the building to suit the then taste. In consequence of the Palazzo also got his name, in line with its white facade.

1899 occurred the last heiress, Maria Brignole Sale, Duchess of Galliera, the Palazzo from the municipality, which been converted into him in a public museum.

The Art Gallery

After 1887, the gallery was enriched by the purchase of numerous private collections. Through the restoration of the building after the Second World War, mainly by Orlando Grosso, Caterina Marcenaro and Franco Albini performed, and through the transfer of sculptures and frescoes from other museums, won the Art Gallery of quality.

The Art Gallery offers a panorama of European paintings from the period between the 12th and 17th centuries, with emphasis on Genoese, Flemish, French and Spanish artists. The works of the 16th century include paintings by Paolo Veronese, painter of the Venetian school, and Filippino Lippi of Florence. Among the Danish and Flemish paintings from the 16th - 17th century stand out works by Rubens ( for example, Venus and Mars) and Van Dyck ( Vertummo and Pomona ). More famous Spanish artists of the gallery are Zurbaran, Ribera and Murillo.

Among the Genoese artists who are represented in the Palazzo Bianco, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione include, Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo, Bernardo Strozzi, Valerio Castello, Domenico Piola, Paul Gerolamo Piola, Gregorio De Ferrari and Alessandro Magnasco.
