Papa San

Papa San (born as Tyrone Thompson, born 1966 in Spanish Town, Jamaica ) is a Jamaican reggae, dancehall and gospel singer.

Life and Music

Tyrone Thompson was raised by his early childhood by his grandmother with the Rastafarian faith. His father was Deejay of the Black Universe sound system of Spanish Town and took him and his two brothers early on with events. At the age of twelve he started as a DJ at the selfsame sound system. He is the brother of the murdered in 1993 Dancehall singer Dirtsman. His second brother was murdered at a young age. Early on, he was standing next significant artists such as Lieutenant Stitchie, Josey Wales or Tenor Saw. His first hit, he together with his former protege Lady G. with the song Legal Rights of 1989. Afterwards he had frequently songs that was placed in the Jamaican charts in the top ten places, such as I Will Survive, Strange and Maddy Maddy Cry. In 1988 he produced an album with UK reggae singer Tippa Irie, which landed in the top ten in the UK charts. Papa San has worked with other artists such as Black Scorpio, King Jammy and Fatis Burrell. The produced along with David Morales song The Program could reach 1994 # 1 on the Billboard Dance Charts. 1997 Thompson converted to Christianity, which also influences in his musical stalk. His texts have since been more spiritual content. Many hip-hop and reggae artists (especially Capleton ) cite him as a major influence. In Sound Clash, he is known for his extremely hard and fast (often improvised ) texts, the other deejays dissing without it hurting. Papa San is the only artist in Jamaica, the biggest reggae and dancehall festival in the world, since its inception occurs when Sting Festival. Tyrone Thompson and his wife live in Weston, Florida. He has five children.
