Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 208 1781

Papyrus 5 ( in the Gregory- Aland numbering 5) is an early manuscript of the New Testament in Greek. It is a papyrus manuscript of the Gospel of John and is dated to the early 3rd century.

Description

The manuscript is a fragment of two sheets that have been described in a column on each side. The surviving text includes Johannes with the verses 1,23-31.33-40; 16.14 to 30; 20,11-17.19-20.22-25.

The manuscript was written in a documentary handwriting with upright uncials of medium size. It contains nouns sacra ( ΙΗΝ ΙΗΣ ΠΡ ΠΡΑ ΠΡΣ ΘΥ ) but not for ανθρωπος.

The Greek text representative of the Alexandrian text-type. Aland describes him as " plain text " and placed it in Category I.

The papyrus has big accordance with the Codex Sinaiticus in contrast to the Codex Vaticanus.

History

The papyrus was found in Oxyrhynchus (Egypt) by Grenfell and Hunt. They released him in Oxyrhynchus Papyri, Part II (1899 ), no 208 and in Oxyrhynchus Papyri, Part XV, 1781 S. 8-12.

Currently, he is kept in the British Library ( Inv. nos. 782, 2484 ) in London.
