Patea

Patea is the third largest city of the south of the Taranaki region on the North Island of New Zealand. It lies on the west bank of the Patea River, 61 km north-west of Wanganui on State Highway 3 Hawera is 27 km to the northwest, Waverley 17 km east.

The Patea River flows from north-west to the city and flows into the South Taranaki Bight. The place had the Census 2006 1143 inhabitants, a decrease of 159 since 2001.

History

Patea, which has previously been long known by European settlers a time Carlyle or Carlyle Beach, was originally closer to the mouth of the Patea River. During the New Zealand Wars Patea was an important military settlement. General Cameron's forces met on 15 January 1865 at the river mouth and built on both sides of the river redoubts.

Patea was after the war to the marketplace. The first lots were sold in 1870. 1872 was a shipping company and harbor started to improve. So breakwater originated in 1878 at the river mouth.

The railway line between Marton and New Plymouth on Patea was completed in March 1885. The Carlyle Town Board was established in 1877 to manage the resort, it was replaced on 13 October 1881 by a borough council under the name of Patea.

In the 1920s Patea was the world's biggest export harbor for cheese. The Cool Store graders got cheese from all over the South Taranaki, south to Oroua Downs near Himatangi. After sorting, the cheese was loaded on to a company's own quay on coastal vessels and shipped to Wellington, where it was loaded onto ships for export. The port closed in July 1959.

The city came to national attention in 1982, as the main employer, Patea Freezing Works closed.

Patea in 1984, known by the group Patea Māori Club and her one- hit wonder Poi E as a sign of new life into the pop music of the Māori.

Patea Freezing Works

In the early 1880 years, on the east bank of the Patea River Patea Freezing Works of a predecessor. Today's city

Patea has a medical center, a swimming pool, a retirement home and a " Library Plus" which contains apart from the borrow literature, various administrative services and Internet access. Patea has a golf club where the New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell learned to play golf

The town has two schools. The Patea Area School is a composite school with 2011 140 students. By 2005, she was the Patea High School and then was with the closure of the primary school of the Patea Area School. The elementary school was founded in 1875.

The St. Joseph's School is a Catholic integrated into public education Contributing Primary School for grades 1 to 6 with 2011 23 students. It was founded in January 1904.
