Patrick III., Earl of Dunbar

Patrick III, Earl of Dunbar. (* 1213, † August 24, 1289 ) was the 13th century a Scottish lord of East Lothian mastered, an important military commander of the Scottish- English border and temporarily held the office of Guardian of Scotland.

Life

Patrick III. was the son of Patrick II, Earl of Dunbar and his wife Euphemia de Brus. He was a descendant in direct line from Gospatric, the first Earl of Northumbria, whose successors ruled under the title of Earl of Lothian, before Patrick's great-grandfather, Waltheof finally used the title of Earl of Dunbar.

Patrick did his oath of allegiance in 1249 against the English king Henry III. The Earltum of Dunbar was part of a pro-English party that rebelled against the regency of the house Comyn and 1255 finally reached their expulsion from power. In the same year Patrick was appointed along with Alan Durward and Alexander Stewart to Guardian of Scotland and took over the regency. After the house Comyn in 1257 could bring the Scottish king in his power, Patrick was forced to resign in the ensuing compromise between the power fractions in 1259 as regent.

In 1263 he founded a Carmelite monastery in Dunbar, the same year he commanded a division of the Scottish army at the Battle of Largs. In 1266, his seal is on the between Alexander III. and the Norwegian king Magnus V. concluded contract with the Isle of Man and the Hebrides were ceded to Scotland. In 1281 his name the second of thirteen on the marriage contract of Margaret of Scotland and the Norwegian King Erik II was two years later, in 1284, he belonged to the Parliament in Scone that Princess Margaret of Norway declared the heir to the Scottish crown.

He died on 24 August 1284 Wittingehame and was buried in Dunbar.

Patrick III. married his first wife (before 1240) Cecily, daughter of John FitzRobert, Lord of Warkworth.

His second wife Christiana (also: Cristiana, or Christian ) by whom he had five known children:
