Patrick R. Cooney

Patrick Ronald Cooney ( born March 10, 1934 in Detroit, † 15 October 2012 in Gaylord ) was Bishop of Gaylord.

Life

Patrick Ronald Cooney received on 20 December 1959 was ordained a priest by Bishop Martin John O'Connor, the rector of the Pontifical North American College. He studied philosophy at Sacred Heart Seminary College in Detroit (1952 /56) and theology (1956 /58) and the Holy Scriptures (1958 /60) at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. From 1960 to 1962 he worked in pastoral ministry in Detroit. In 1962 he became assistant to the chancellor in the Ordinariate in Detroit. In 1969 he became director of the Department of prayer. From 1967 on, he was chaplain at Mercy College, Detroit. 1977 to 1983 he was rector of the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on December 3, 1982 Titular Bishop of Hodelm and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Detroit. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of Detroit, Cardinal Edmund Casimir Szoka, on 27 January 1983 in Kathehdrale of Detroit; Co-consecrators were Arthur Henry Krawczak, Auxiliary Bishop of Hartford, and Harold Robert Perry, SVD, Auxiliary Bishop of New Orleans.

On November 6, 1989, he was appointed Bishop of Gaylord and introduced into the office on January 28 of next year. From 1987 to 1991 he was chaplain of the VI Region. (Michigan and Ohio) of the U.S. Bishops' Conference. He had numerous other tasks in various committees of the Episcopal Conference.
