Patrick Walsh (bishop of Down and Connor)

Patrick Joseph Walsh ( born April 9, 1931 in Cobh, County Cork) is a retired Roman Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Down and Connor in Northern Ireland.

Life

Walsh attended the St Marys CBGS Belfast and then the St. Malachy 's College, Belfast. He studied Roman Catholic theology and philosophy at Queen's University of Belfast in Belfast and then in Rome. On February 25, 1956 Walsh was ordained a priest. After his ordination, Walsh studied at Cambridge and achieved a master's degree in mathematics at Christ 's College. From 1958 to 1964 Walsh taught as a Mathematics teacher at St MacNissi 's College. From 1964 to 1970 he worked as a chaplain at Queen's University of Belfast. 1970 Walsh was appointed president of St. Malachy 's College.

Walsh was appointed by Pope John Paul II in 1983 titular bishop of Ros Cré and appointed auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Down and Connor. He received his episcopal consecration on 15 May 1983, the Bishop of Down and Connor, and later Cardinal Cahal Daly; Co-consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Ireland, Archbishop Gaetano Alibrandi and retired bishop of Down and Connor William J. Philbin.

1991 Walsh was appointed Bishop of Down and Connor. His age-related retirement request was by Pope Benedict XVI. 2008 upheld.

Walsh lives in Belfast.
