Paul Morton

Paul Morton ( May 22nd 1857 in Detroit, Michigan, † February 19, 1911 in New York City ) was an American businessman and politician ( Republican), who was Secretary of the Navy as the cabinet of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.

Life

Paul Morton grew up in Nebraska Territory, where his father, Julius, exercised the office of governor; later this was U.S. Secretary of Agriculture in the cabinet of Grover Cleveland. Paul Morton's cousin Levi P. Morton was 1889-1993 U.S. vice president under Benjamin Harrison.

After attending school in Nebraska City went Morton, after he turned 18 years old, to Chicago, where he initially worked as a transport driver for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, a railroad company. Later he became president of another railway company, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

Public offices

Politically, Morton operated first at the short-lived National Democratic Party, a spin-off of the conservative wing of the Democratic Party, which was also known as the Gold Democrats. Towards the end of the 19th century, he then joined the Republicans.

His networking within the party and his services as a businessman eventually led to his appointment as Secretary of the Navy in June 1904. He joined the Cabinet Roosevelt succession of the Ministry of Justice exchanged William H. Moody, even though he practically had no prior knowledge of naval affairs. On December 7, 1904 his appointment was confirmed by the Senate.
