Paul Nizon

Paul Nixon ( born December 19, 1929 in Bern ) is a Swiss art historian and writer.

Life

Paul Nixon is the son of a Russian chemist, his mother came from Bern. After the final examination, he studied art history, classical archeology and German at the Universities of Bern and Munich. In 1957, he was with a thesis on Vincent van Gogh ( The early drawing style. Study of the artistic form and its relation to psychology and philosophy of the artist) Dr. phil. doctorate. Subsequently, he was employed until 1959 as a research assistant at the History Museum in Berne. 1960 he held a fellowship at the Swiss Institute in Rome. In 1961, he was chief art critic of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. He gave up the prestigious post for an uncertain life in the literature. Since 1962, Nixon, who has been living in Paris in 1977, works as a freelance writer. In addition, Nixon was a guest of the 1962 Group 47 in Berlin. There he met writers such as Günter Grass, Martin Walser and Ingeborg Bachmann know and read from his second book Canto, which was published in 1963. He has held several visiting professorships, about 1984 at the Johann -Wolfgang- Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1987 at Washington University in St. Louis.

Paul Nixon belongs since 1971 to the author federation authors of Switzerland and since 1980 the Swiss German PEN Centre. Nizon archive is located in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern.
