Paul Ranson

Paul -Elie Ranson ( born March 29, 1864 in Limoges, † February 20, 1909 in Paris) was a French designer and painter of symbolism; and founder of the Paris Académie Ranson.

Life

Paul Ranson was the son of a successful local politician; his mother died shortly after his birth and he grew up with his grandparents on mother's side. He took his first drawing lessons from his grandfather and later studied art history at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Limoges. His teachers recognized his artistic talent, who advised him strongly to continue his studies in Paris.

In 1888 he went to Paris for further training at Tony Robert -Fleury at the prestigious Académie Julian. In Montparnasse he maintained a studio and made in a very short time acquaintance with the most famous artists of the city, including Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Ker -Xavier Roussel, Aristide Maillol, Félix Vallotton and Edouard Vuillard. With Paul Sérusier soon he formed a close friendship and one of the founders of Parisian artists Nabis ( prophets ).

In 1908 he founded with Paul Sérusier and Marie -France Rousseau, cousin and wife of the painter Ranson, the Académie Ranson. The school was famous and had very good teachers, as, among others: Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Roger Bissière, Ker -Xavier Roussel, Moise Kisling, Gustave Singier and Aristide Maillol. Among his most famous students include, among others, Roger de la Fresnaye, Alfred Gold, Paul Eliasberg, Ivo Hauptmann, Tamara de Lempicka, Otto Niemeyer -Holstein, Jean Le Moal, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Gino Severini.

Trivia

  • From the marriage with his cousin Marie -France Rousseau a son, Michel went (* 1898), produced.
  • After his early death, his widow continued the Académie Ranson; and then his son.
