Paulo Moura

Paulo Moura ( born July 15, 1932 in São José do Rio Preto, † July 12, 2010 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian wood wind instruments ( clarinet, saxophone) and composer, one of the leading performers of choro and Populisatoren the Música Popular Brasileira belonged.

Life and work

Moura, who comes from a musical family (his father ran a dance band ), received from the age of nine, clarinet lessons and joined with 13 years in the ensemble of his father. After the family moved to Rio de Janeiro, he studied with 18 years at the National Conservatory. After he had completed the entire study in two years, he continued his studies in music theory, harmony and counterpoint privately with Paulo Silva, at Guerra Peixe, in Moacir Santos and by jazz maestro Cipó continued. At age 19, he was a member of the orchestra of Osvaldo Borba, then e Sua Orquestra Zacarias. He also led to Weber's Clarinet Concerto with the Orquestra Sinfonica Nacional. In 1953 he went with the Orquestra Ary Barroso on Mexico tour; the following year he played in the Conjunto de Morais Guio. In 1956, he took with Paganini's Moto Perpetuo on his first album, which was followed by many more albums under his own name and with other Brazilian musicians. 1958 brought him Rádio Nacional ( Radiobras ) for two years as an orchestrator and conductor. In 1959 he became principal clarinetist in the Municipal Theater Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro ( he accompanied this position 17 years). In 1962 he took up with Baden Powell and joined with the Conjunto Bossa Rio by Sérgio Mendes in New York's Carnegie Hall with the legendary Bossa Nova Festival; In the same year he was also involved in the recording of the album Cannonball 's Bossa Nova by Cannonball Adderley.

As a soloist, he has performed at New York's Lincoln Center as well as in Russia and Latin America; among other things, he was the Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira ( the aufführte his own works ) and Orquestra Sinfonica do Estado accompanied by de São Paulo. With its Choro Trio and with his Gafieira Orchestra he also appeared in Europe; In 1982, he was heard at the Berlin Jazz Festival with its own ensemble. In 1995, he was with João Bosco and John Patitucci on tour.

1997 Moura won the Prêmio Sharp for his CD Pixinguinha: Paulo Moura e os Batutas. As the first Brazilian instrumentalist Moura won a Latin Grammy in 2000 ( for this album ). In 2008 he was nominated for his album para cá e Pra Lá for another Latin Grammy. As a conductor and arranger, he worked for Brazilian musicians such as Elis Regina, Fagner, Taiguara, Milton Nascimento and Marisa Monte. He has also worked as a consultant of the Brazilian Music Council.

He died of cancer.
