Paysandú is the capital of the departments Paysandú in Uruguay.

Geography

It is located on the east bank of the River Uruguay ( Uruguay River ), on the other side of the river lies just to the north - linked via the General Artigas Bridge with Paysandú - Argentine town of Colón.

History

The city was founded in 1772 by a priest named Sandu.

Population

With about 85,000 inhabitants Paysandú is to Montevideo and Salto is the third largest city in the country.

Economy and infrastructure

It is an important industrial center. In addition to wool, textile and leather industry, the food industry (sugar, beer ) is important. Agricultural Faculty of the city is one of the few universities in the country outside of Montevideo.

Attractions

The city has a remarkable and well-known beyond the borders basilica named Nuestra Señora del Rosario y San Benito de Palermo. The basilica is an organ of the German organ builder Oscar Walcker in 1906 with 23 registers, two manuals and pedal. This historic organ was with the help of the Federal Republic of Germany from Gebr Oberlinger organ building, Windesheim, restored.

Sports

The stadium of the city is the Estadio Parque Artigas. The most important football club Paysandús is Paysandú Bella Vista. Another, in the population but about significantly less support enacting football club is the FC Paysandú. Moreover, the Rugby Club Trébol Rugby is located in Paysandú.
