PC Tools (Central Point Software)

The PC Tools were a compilation of programs by Central Point Software originally for DOS. The functionality included, among other things, tracking down and fixing errors in the file system, the recovery of deleted files and means for system optimization and system security.

Scope

The collection added features that were not included with the operating system DOS. With MS -DOS 6.0 / PC DOS 6.1 Microsoft and IBM have licensed parts of the PC Tools and integrated into the operating system.

The last version available for DOS was PC Tools Pro 9.0. There was also a version of PC Tools for Windows, which also improved file manager and a replacement for the Program Manager of Windows 3.1 contained, in addition to the corresponding Windows versions of well-known from the DOS version of her programs. The replacement of the program manager was revolutionary. Long before Windows 95 offered the PC Tools Desktop Manager many features that were introduced later with Windows 95, such as the ability to create folders within folders to manage multiple desktops, various display modes for different folders (list, details, small icons, etc.).

Only with MS -DOS 6.0 (Microsoft ) or PC DOS 6.1 (IBM), some programs have been the manufacturer of the PC Tools, Central Point Software, licensed and even integrated into the operating system.

NT Tools

Taking the Plunge into the 32 -bit era had not managed the PC Tools. The company Central Point Software was established in June 1994 - bought by their main competitor, Symantec - a few months before the release of Windows 95. Symantec is best known for the Norton Utilities. In revised form were from Symantec ( in essence, extended to FTP, various name changes, * Pak write away, new version of sfx. ) Ported the file manager and the renamed in system Doctor Crash Guard on Windows NT, and together with the Norton program system information as Norton NT tools sold (for Windows NT 3.51 ). Others

In 2004, the Australian company WinGuides Network was renamed to PC Tools Pty Limited and offered a variety of system and security programs for Windows to. These have the original PC Tools of Central Point but nothing in common. In August 2008, the acquisition was announced by Symantec. Symantec now offers turn in addition to the existing products (Norton ) and those under the name PC tools (for example, PC Tools Internet Security).
