Per Carlen ( born November 19, 1960 in Karlstad / Sweden ) is a former Swedish handball player and a current Handball coach.

The left-hander was able to celebrate his greatest success in the 1980s and 1990s with the Swedish national team.

Per Carlen is married with Meka and has three children. His son Oscar Carlen (* 1988) played in the Swedish national handball team. Daughter Hilda is keeper of the Swedish U20 national football team.

Career as a player

Per Carlen 1990 was surprising with the Swedish national team after a 27:23 final win over the Soviet Union Handball World Champion. With 32 goals scored in this tournament he was after Magnus Wislander the second- best pitcher of his team. Four years later he was in Portugal with European champions Sweden. In addition to his main position on the circle Carlén was used also in the backcourt. In the period between 1982 and 1996, he played 329 matches for the Swedish national team, in which he threw 1032 gates.

Career as a coach

In the season 2006/2007 Carlen was coach of the Swiss division club TSV St. Otmar St. Gallen. 2007 Carlen coached the Swedish first division club IFK Malmö. In summer 2008, he moved along with his son Oscar in the Bundesliga and was an assistant coach with the SG Flensburg -Handewitt. Coach was Kent-Harry Andersson. After several failures of SG and immediately after a home defeat in the derby against THW Kiel, the club announced on December 21, 2008 announced the separation of Andersson and made Carlen head coach. On 11 November 2010 Carlen was relieved of his duties and succeeded by sports director Vranjes.

On 11 February 2011 the HSV Hamburg Carlen presented as new coach from the 2011/12 season. He signed a three-year contract until 30 June 2014 and inherited Martin Schwalb, which was after the season 2010/11 Manager of the HSV Hamburg. He thus followed his son Oscar Carlen, who moved to the 2011/12 season of the SG Flensburg- Handewitt to the hamburgers. On 29 December 2011, the HSV Hamburg announced the separation of Carlen. On November 29, 2013 Carlen took over until the end of the season 2013/14 as coach of the Danish first division club Bjerringbro - Silkeborg.
