Per Henrik Wallin

Per Henrik Wallin ( born July 17, 1946 in Karl Borg; † 15 June 2005 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish jazz pianist, big band leader and composer. From its importance for her pianistic development of free improvised music in Europe it is compared with Fred Van Hove and Misha Mengelberg.

Life and work

In the late 1950s he was introduced by his father, an officer, to the jazz music. He was particularly influenced by Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum and Bud Powell and mixed in free improvisation music from a variety of sources, not just jazz. Wallin has both solo, as well as a trio and with his own big band ( Per Henrik Wallin and his gear) was added, beginning in 1975 with the label Dragon with own trio which he and upon arrival in Stockholm mid-1970s with the alto saxophonist Lars- Göran Ulander drummer Peter Olsen was formed. In 1978 he formed a new trio with Torbjörn Hultcrantz on bass and Erik Dahlbäck on drums, with whom he played for ten years. With his trio, he toured back then in the rest of Europe. In the 1980s, he began composing for big bands. In 1988, he suffered a serious car accident which left him paralyzed hüftabwärts. Only in 1995 he began to play the piano (without using the pedal and thus dynamically limited), but became particularly prominent with big band recordings. Before his death, he released another solo album.

He also played with the ( since childhood ) friend, drummer Sven -Åke Johansson, Eje Thelin and Jonas Kullhammar (in his big band).

In 2003 he was awarded the Django d'Or Award as Contemporary Star of Jazz. For Tivedens he received the Gyllene Skivan of Orkesterjournals 2002.
