Karlsborg

Karl Borg is a place in the Swedish province of Västra Götaland County and the historic province of Västergötland. In addition, the location of the capital of the municipality of the same name.

Location

The place is mostly on a strip of land between Lake Vättern and the much smaller Bottensjön.

Karl Borg and the adjacent National Park Tivedens lie in one of the loveliest landscapes in Sweden. Many small lakes are still in the area.

The nearest large towns are Skövde about 40 km to the west, Mariestad about 45 km north-west, Askersund about 35 km north and 20 km south of Hjo Karl Borg.

History

Karl Borg was at the mouth of the Göta Canal in Lake Vättern in the fortress Karl Borg, was first built in 1819. Karl Borg was an outspoken garrison town with about 1,800 inhabitants around 1900., Even after the withdrawal of the fortress in 1925 remained Karl Borg an important garrison town.

Karl Borg is on Riksväg 49, which leads from Skövde Askersund.

Traffic

A rail link from Skövde Karl Borg was the Karlsborgbanan since 27 July 1876. The electrification of the single track was held in 1937 - the passenger ended after over 110 years from 1986 until 1993 freight still took place. . The tracks are still there. But there are several bus lines that connects the Karl Borg on all weekdays with the surrounding area.

The fortress Karl Borg and the location of the village on the Gota Canal were important for the development of a tourist resort.
