Percy Stafford Allen

Percy Stafford Allen ( * July 7, 1869 in Twickenham, † June 16, 1933 in Oxford ) was a British classical scholar.

Life

Allen received his first education in Rottingdean. Since 1882, he studied Latin and Greek at Clifton College, and since 1888 at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. One of his teachers was James Anthony Froude Oxford. In 1892 he received his B. A., 1896 his M. A. From 1897 to 1901 he taught history at the Government College in Lahore ( Pakistan). Then he returned to Oxford in 1908 and a Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. From 1924 to 1933 he was president of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He was married to Helen Mary Allen ( 1872-1952 ). Allen has become known primarily as an editor of the Letters of Erasmus of Rotterdam (Oxford 1906ff. , 12 volumes, of which an index volume ).
