Perniö

Perniö [ pɛrniœ ] ( swedish Bjärnå ) is a former municipality on the coast of Southwest Finland. In early 2009 it was incorporated into the town of Salo.

Perniö located 23 km south of the center of Salo in the landscape Varsinais- Suomi. The distance to Turku is 75 km, in the capital, Helsinki, there are 132 kilometers. The community Perniö had an area of ​​408.13 km ². The landscape in the former municipality area is characterized by wooded hills and agricultural river valleys. The population of the municipality was 5,903 last. Half of the population lived in the parish village of Perniö. Other population centers ( taajama ) are Teijo and station area ( Perniön asemaseutu ). The community was Perniö monolingual Finnish speakers.

The oldest written mention of Perniö dates from the year 1330. St. Lawrence's Church of Perniö was built in 1480. In the Middle Ages, the situation on the King's Road, the old way of the Swedish kings from Turku to Viborg, the emergence of estates in Perniö favored. In the 17th century, the historical cultural ironworks Mathildedal, Teijo, Koski and Kirjakkala emerged. To date, the metal industry is an important industry in Perniö.
