Perry Christie

Perry Gladstone Christie ( born August 21, 1944 in Nassau ) is since May 8, 2012 Prime Minister of the Bahamas. He has held this office from 2002 to 2007 and since 1997 Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP ).

Life

Perry Gladstone Christie was born as the first son of a taxi driver Gladstone L. Christie and Nurse Naomi Christie (nee Allen). He grew up in the Central District of New Providence, which is also known as "The Valley ". Here in 1958 the Junkanoo group Valley Boys, to which he belonged since the beginning. In the Pioneers Sporting Club, Christie was joined around the same time, he improved his athletic skills to the extent that in 1960 he, the Bahamas in the West Indies Federation Games in Kingston, Jamaica and 1962 at the Central American and Caribbean Games, also in Kingston represented. In both years, he entered the discipline to triple jump and was even able to pick up the bronze medal for his country at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Due to his poor academic performance, he was thrown from the Government High School. This was for the young Perry Christie a dramatic experience dar. However, to obtain a high school diploma, he attended the esters then Senior School in Nassau. After he had there his degree, he went to the University Tutorial College, London and Birmingham University. There he made his LL.B. in 1969 ( Bachelor of Laws ) with honors and then became the Inner Temple, the Court of Justice of England and Wales, was appointed. After his return to the Bahamas, he was a lawyer senior partner of a prestigious law firm.

A self-professed Anglicans and his wife Bernadette Joan, nee Hanna, a chartered accountant and a lawyer, two sons ( Steffan and Adam ) and a daughter ( Alexandra).

Political career

His first political success celebrated Perry Christie in November 1974 when he, by the incumbent Prime Minister Lynden O. Pindling, was appointed by then Senator youngest in the history of the Bahamas. He held until June 1977, was appointed in January 1978 as Chairman of the gaming authority this office. At the parliamentary elections in 1977, he presented himself for the Progressive Liberal Party in the election district Centreville. After the PLP and Perry Christie could book the choice for the new Member of Parliament was brought into the Cabinet of Lynden Pindling, in which he took over the Ministry of Health and Social Security. In the next elections in June 1982, he managed to be re-elected and it took this time the Ministry of Tourism. In March 1990, he re-entered the PLP and then took over the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Industry. In the parliamentary elections in August 1992, he was his seat in Parliament, despite the strong loss of votes his party, which no longer had the majority, defend. In January 1993 he was elected a Deputy party leader and took over the responsibility for extra-parliamentary activities of his party. In the parliamentary elections in March 1997, Perry Christie was able to secure the newly created District Farm Road and had therefore one of only six seats of the PLP in the House of Assembly.

On April 5, 1997 Perry Christie was elected in a special meeting for the new party leader of the PLP, which triggered from Lynden Pindling, who had led the party since 1956. He sat down in the election against his two rivals Dr. Bernard J. Nottage, and Philip C. Galanis. Two days later, on April 7, he was then by the Governor-General Sir Orville Alton Turnquest appointed leader of the opposition. In the parliamentary elections on 2 May 2002 Perry Christie could get with his party 's election victory and beat his old friend Hubert Ingraham of the Free National Movement, in which they erringten 29 of the 40 seats in the House of Assembly. Since May 3, he is now the third Prime Minister of the Bahamas after independence. In the early morning hours of May 3, 2005 Perry Christie suffered a mild stroke, whereupon the Deputy Prime Minister Cynthia Pratt from May 4 to May 22 took over his official business. In the elections of May 2007, the Free National Movement and the FNP - chief Hubert Ingraham became prime minister won.

In the parliamentary elections on 7 May 2012 Christie's PLP won an absolute majority, Christie was sworn in as prime minister on 8 May 2012.
